For years IHOP was the place you could just turn up at, whenever. Two in the morning, sign still lit, pancakes still going. That reputation stuck around and honestly it’s still doing a lot of heavy lifting, because these days it’s only sort of true. Some restaurants never close. A lot of them do now.
So if you’re sitting there tonight wondering whether there’s a 24 hour IHOP near you, the real answer is that it completely depends on which one you mean. I mean it varies restaurant to restaurant, not city to city. One might be open all night and the next one over shuts at ten. Here’s why that happened, and how to figure out which kind yours is before you bother driving over.
What actually changed
Two things, and neither one was some big announcement from head office. The first is that pretty much every IHOP is owned by a franchisee, not by the chain itself. Whoever owns that particular restaurant is the one setting the hours. So there was never really one national schedule that somebody went and changed.
The second thing is staffing, and this is the bigger one. Keeping a dining room open overnight means you need a whole overnight crew, so cooks, servers, somebody working the till. When it got hard to hire people for those shifts, a quiet 2am Tuesday just stopped making any sense financially. Plenty of locations switched to fixed daily hours during the pandemic closures and then never switched back, because the numbers still didn’t work.
Which means the ones that kept 24 hour service are the ones with enough overnight business to actually pay for that crew. And that turns out to be pretty easy to predict.
Where the 24 hour locations survived
It’s not random at all, it’s geographic. Overnight service hung on in about five kinds of place.
Highway and interstate exits
This is the most reliable category, and it’s not close. These restaurants exist for people driving through at hours nobody really plans for, and that kind of demand doesn’t care what the clock says. If you need food at 4am and you’ve got options, aim for one of these.
City centres
Bars closing, people finishing work at midnight, general late night foot traffic. Downtown locations in bigger cities are usually still round the clock. If it’s anywhere near a nightlife strip, it almost definitely is.
Near hospitals and airports
Shift workers coming off a rota at three in the morning, passengers stuck with a delayed flight. Both of those are steady, dependable overnight business. A hospital across the road is honestly one of the better signs that a place trades all night.
Tourist strips and casino areas
Vegas is the obvious one, but it holds anywhere the local economy runs on visitors keeping weird hours. These are about as close to a sure thing as you’ll get.
And where it didn’t survive
Suburban shopping areas and small towns, basically. If your local IHOP is sitting in a strip mall next to a grocery store, just assume 7am to 10pm and check before you count on anything later than that. Rural ones often close even earlier, sometimes 8pm on a weekday.
How to check, takes about a minute
Don’t trust a national figure on this, including mine. Just check the actual restaurant you’re planning to go to.
- Google Maps is quickest. Search the restaurant, look at the hours panel. If it trades overnight it’ll say “Open 24 hours” instead of giving you a closing time. That’s the whole test, really.
- The official locator tells you more. The IHOP restaurant locator shows the same schedule plus which services that location actually offers, so use that one if you also need to know about delivery or curbside.
- Just phone them if it matters. Listed hours go stale after a schedule change, and a listing nobody updated looks exactly the same as one that’s correct. If you’re making a special trip late at night, thirty seconds on the phone beats driving out there for nothing.
One thing that hasn’t changed
Whenever the doors are open, you can get breakfast. There’s no cut off time, no switching over to some lunch-only menu at eleven, nothing stopping you ordering pancakes at 9pm. That part of the reputation is completely intact, and it works at every location no matter what time they close.
